| On 12 October 2009 the first phase of the Vetting and Barring scheme was established and will be carried out by the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) and the CRB. |
| The following safeguards have now been introduced to enhance the protection of children and vulnerable adults: |
The basic disclosure will contain details of convictions held in central police records which are unspent according to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 or alternatively it will state that there are no convictions. |
Standard CRB checks are for people entering certain professions, such as members of the legal, security and accountancy professions. Standard checks no longer include a check of the old or new barred lists from 12 October 2009, therefore if you are working or volounteering with children or vulnerable adults, you may now be entitled to an Enhanced CRB check. |
Enhanced CRB checks are for posts involving work in a regulated activity for a regulated provider with children or vulnerable adults. In general, the type of work will involve regularly caring for, supervising, training or being in sole charge of such people. e.g teachers or scout/guide leaders.
| Enhanced checks contain the same information as Standard checks but with a check of the new barred lists if requested and any locally held police force information considered relevant to the job role. |
| New employees and those changing jobs in regulated activity do not need to start applying for ISA registration until July 2010 and ISA registration does not become mandatory for these workers until November 2010. All other staff will be phased into the scheme from 2011. |
